KEITH RICHARDS, MONTAUK, NY, JUNE, 1975Cooking eggsLINER NOTES Once, I was sitting in one of the rooms and I smelled something cooking. I thought, God, that smells really good, like eggs or something. I went into the kitchen - this was still midday - and there was Keith, standing over a frying pan at the stove, without a shirt on, cooking up some eggs. I had to do a triple take: he never got up much before six or 7 p.m. Thank God I had my camera because this was a one-in-a-million shot. - Ken ReganSIZE 20 x 24MEDIUM Silver gelatin print.VALUE $2,000 - $2,700STARTING BID $1,575

PAUL WELLER & PETE TOWNSHEND, LONDON, 1980LINER NOTES Paul Weller (The Jam) met his hero Pete Townshend (The Who) for the first time on Wardour Street in London outside the famous Marquee Club in the summer of 1981. Weller's look was resolutely Mod, he told Mojo magazine You could say it's a fashion statement, but I think it's more than that: the working class love of clothes, looking good, rising above your station. I don't think it will ever die ' These clothes, my haircut, reflect my attitude and the music I listen to, and they say 'I am an individual'.This is one of the first shots I took of them that afternoon - it is a moment in time - Weller looking so sharp in his pin stripe suit. Later I listened to them talking about music, mods and life - the interview and this image was a cover story for Melody Maker magazine. - Janette BeckmanSIZE 20 x 24 MEDIUM Silver gelatin print.VALUE $1,260 - $1,650STARTING BID $975

Besides, there was nothing I could say to Frank Zappa that would in any way make me intellectual equal. I knew I could take great pictures but I knew that I couldn't keep up with his mind. We got up there and I said to writer [Jerry] Hopkins, You do the interview first then I'll do the pictures, but Zappa wanted to do the pictures right away so he and I went out behind his house and found all these bizarre photographic situations that were both wacky and fantastic. I didn't have to say or direct anything; he just started fooling around because he was having such a great time being Frank; Frank being Frank - performing for me and my camera without direction. -Baron WolmanSPECIFICS Nikon F camera, 35mm format, Tri-X film SIZE 16 x 20MEDIUM Archival digital print.VALUE $900 - $1,150 STARTING BID $700

BOB DYLAN, LONDON, 1965BBC TV Studio canteenLINER NOTES Bob was rehearsing for a live TV show during his Don't Look Back tour. He was the biggest influence on us Brits since Elvis. He was hanging-out during a break from rehearsals so I asked if I could shoot some pictures and in his very Bob way wearing a big smile, he said, 'you can shoot yourself if you want to'sure it's cool, carry on - so I did. ELTON JOHN, LONDON, 1970With a Gentleman of the Road, Soho Square LINER NOTES Dick James Music asked me if I would take some pictures of a singer/piano player chap they had, so I said okay send him round to my studio. Next day this chap called Elton John turns up at my door. He didn't exactly look at all like a pop star; he seemed just another ordinary guy, very quiet and a bit shy. I asked him what he did and he said he'd been the piano player with Long John Baldry and lastly in a band called Bluesology. We did a few rolls of film in my studio but it seemed Elton wasn't 'coming alive' in the shots so I suggested a walk around Soho Square to try to loosen him up and get him more relaxed. At the end of the shoot Elton sat down on a park bench next to a 'Gentleman of the Road' who was eating his sandwich for lunch. It was the best picture of the entire shoot. Many years later it finally appeared in the CD booklet for Elton John Rare Masters, along with a few photos from my other shoots. -Barrie WentzellSIZE 20 x 24MEDIUM Silver gelatin print.VALUE $2,300 - $3,000 STARTING BID $1,750

BOB DYLAN, LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND, 1966Bob felt great in Liverpool. The scenery, the houses, the open spaces were wonderful. He got all athletic throwing all these rocks around. I asked if he wanted a photo with them and he said sure, so we found a doorway of this old warehouse. The kids were just playing in the street; they just got in there wherever they could stand. HERMAN LEONARD, 21ST EDITION PLATINUM, 1940SLINER NOTES In the late 1940's, Herman Leonard's passion for Jazz brought him to the swinging clubs of Broadway, 52nd Street and Harlem. With the camera as his free ticket, he photographed and developed friendships with some of the greats of Jazz history including Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington and many more.A year's apprenticeship with Yousuf Karsh provided invaluable experience photographing the likes of Albert Einstein, Harry S. Truman and Clark Gable. In 1956 Leonard was chosen to be Marlon Brando's personal photographer for an extensive research trip to the Far East. In the late 1950's Leonard headed for Paris where he worked in fashion and advertising and served as the European photographer for Playboy Magazine. The Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC has honored him by housing an entire collection of his personal archives of musical history. President Clinton presented a portfolio of Leonard's prints as an official gift from the United States government to a fellow musician, The King of Thailand. Lou and Laurie Anderson had not long met and sometimes dinner would just be me, Laurie, and Lou and it was an amazing experience watching them fall in love with each other's minds. This is a candid shot from the other side of the dinner table. CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG, MAUI, 1973 LINER NOTES The four of us were in Neil's house that he had rented on the beach there in Hawaii. We had been working on an album that was going to be called Human Highway. It had fabulous songs in it which later appeared on David's record and Stephen's records. The last day we were there, I realized that we didn't have any image of that moment. I also thought we might need an album cover, so I borrowed Stephen's Hasselblad, because I wanted it to be a big format. I worked out the exposure in my mind. I set it down in the sand, looked through the viewfinder, composed the picture, had the boys go into the picture, and I knew where I would be standing. I had my friend Harry Harris, who was the builder of my house in San Francisco, press the trigger. LES PAUL, MAHWAH, NJ, 1995LINER NOTES This photo was done for the Arts & Leisure section of the New York Times, on the occasion of Les' 80th birthday. The shoot was in the basement studio of his home. Among many historic objects and innovations there, he had a larger than life size photo of himself at age 15. As soon as I saw it, I knew I wanted to shoot him in front of it. I wasn't entirely sure he'd like the idea. I did several other photos to be sure I was well covered. I then asked if we could do one more photo; Les Paul at 80 with Les Paul at 15. He said, wait a minute, and disappeared. He returned with the same guitar (w/a new neck), the same harmonica and the same rack, 65 years later! He loved the idea! It ran very big in the Sunday Times. Many folks think it is a montage created in PhotoShop, but it's a straight, unmanipulated photograph. -Joe RosenSPECIFICS Shot on a Canon EOS-1, 24-70mm lens, Ilford FP4 film.SIZE 16 x 20MEDIUM Silver gelatin print.VALUE $800 - $1,100 STARTING BID $625

DEAD ON THE STEPS, SAN FRANCISCO, 1967LINER NOTES My first story for Rolling Stone was the Grateful Dead bust. The cops came into the band's house and arrested several of them. The entire band wasn't at home at the time so the cops couldn't bust them all or they would have. And that bust was one of the lead stories in the first issue of Rolling Stone. After the press conference Jann [Wenner, co-founder Rolling Stone] asked me to get a group shot of the band on the steps of their house. I suggested they pose for me outside. They asked me, Who are you' I said, I'm Baron from Rolling Stone. They replied, What's Rolling Stone. The band members didn't know what Rolling Stone was (the first issue had yet to be published) so it was really hard to get them to cooperate; at that point I think most of them didn't even knew who I was. When they came out, they wouldn't settle down, pointed their guns this way and that, flipped me the bird, threatened to kill me. It was all great fun for them but at the moment not for me. In the end I did get one great shot. I call it Dead On The Steps. And so ended my first real assignment for Rolling Stone. -Baron WolmanSPECIFICS Nikon F camera, 35mm format, Tri-X film SIZE 16 x 20MEDIUM Silver gelatin print.VALUE $900 - $1,150STARTING BID $700

JERRY GARCIA, THE GRATEFUL DEAD, SAN FRANCISCO, 1969LINER NOTES Jerry Garcia, on the other hand, was as outgoing as could be; he was having a great time. You can see from the pictures he enjoyed the experience. What subsequently turned out to be the most intriguing moment, however, came when Jerry smiled and held up his open right hand, and I shot the picture I now call Jerry Waving. I didn't think anything of it when I clicked the shutter but when I printed it I kept trying to do with my finger what he had apparently done with his finger; I thought he had just been fooling around, bending his finger backwards or forwards or something, but I couldn't make it happen on my hand. It was a long time before I learned that his brother had actually chopped off a piece of his finger when they both were quite young. Jerry usually kept that missing digit out of sight. Most people, even his fans, didn't know about it and here he was, holding it up for the world to see and for me to photograph. I remember that moment as another photographic gift, this time from Jerry Garcia to me. -Baron WolmanSPECIFICS Hasselblad and Tri-X filmSIZE 16 x 20MEDIUM Silver gelatin print.VALUE $900 - $1,150 STARTING BID $700

IKE & TINA TURNER, SAN FRANCISCO, 1967LINER NOTES One of the early assignments I had for Rolling Stone (Issue Number Two) was to photograph Ike & Tina Turner in a little San Francisco club, a very well known club called the Hungry i. At the Hungry i the stage was low, no higher than a table, around three feet. Guests could slide right up to the front of the stage as I did, with nobody hassling you, no two song minimum or any of that nonsense. This was what was so important in those early days, having this kind of intimacy and access - not just backstage access. I'm not talking about big stage access, but in small clubs where you could walk right up to the stage. -Baron WolmanSPECIFICS Nikon F camera, 35mm format, Tri-X filmSIZE 16 x 20MEDIUM Silver gelatin print.VALUE $900 - $1,150STARTING BID $700

SIMON AND GARFUNKEL, MONTEREY POP FESTIVAL, CA, JUNE, 1967LINER NOTES Seeing Art and Paul on stage at Monterey was a throwback experience, and unlike many other bands, they were well known already then. The new San Francisco sounds and the polished but innovative LA bands were more cutting-edge at this moment, but Paul and Art put on a great show with their folk music sound and sweet voices. Paul was one of the organizers of the festival and was amazed by many of the new performers, especially Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Otis Redding. -Elaine MayesSPECIFICS Shot with a Nikon F 35mm analog camera, TriX film.SIZE 16 x 20MEDIUM Archival digital print.VALUE $1,000 - $1,450 STARTING BID $850

ELTON JOHN, NORTH LONDON, 1973Sundown Theatre, EdmontonLINER NOTES Bryan Forbes, the English filmmaker and neighbor of Elton's came along to this gig and filmed the performance, so at least there was good lighting and Elton was in great form. He was performing Crocodile Rock in this picture. I'd done Elton's first photo shoots as a solo performer after he left Long John Baldry's band and had a hard job to get him to loosen up. A couple of years later he was doing acrobatics at his piano, which would have made Jerry Lee Lewis envious. Ed Careff, a photographer whom I admired, inspired this jump shot. Elton showed me some of Ed's photos from his first American tour and there was this great shot of him jumping. DIANA ROSS, LONDON, 1965BBC StudiosLINER NOTES I was at the BBC studios to shoot some pictures during the taping of the weekly TV show 'Top of the Pops and had popped up to the rooftop bar during a break. Diana was sitting at a table talking to a reporter from the Melody Maker and I asked her if it was okay to take a few pictures of her while she was being interviewed. She smiled and said that it would be fine. After she left, the reporter suggested that I send some pictures to the Melody Maker, which I did never thinking that they would be used. The following Wednesday I saw the paper at my local newsstand and there was my photo on the front page along with my name credited, Wow! LED ZEPPELIN, PARIS, 1973 Palais des Sports, FranceLINER NOTES Arriving at the prestigious Hotel George V in Paris after a traumatic trip, as we landed during a thunderstorm after the plane had been struck by lightning, writer Roy Hollingsworth and I headed straight for the bar. We were met by a couple of 'heavy' looking characters who told us that Peter Grant, Led Zeppelin's manager wasn't pleased with us. Unbeknownst to Roy and me, the Melody Maker had given the new Led Zeppelin album Houses of the Holy a less than glowing review. We ordered the strongest drink we could and soon the looming figure of Peter Grant appeared before us. Peter gave us the 'third degree' and let us know that he hoped we would like that night's show at the Palais des Sport. The show was in fact amazing and despite a rather unruly crowd the band was in top form. It did get a good review in the Melody Maker and all was well. After his initial visit in that old Chevy pick-up truck, the next day, Sunday, he arrived in a slick '60 Corvette. I think that car was his pride and joy. It was loaded, it was sleek, it ruled Route 9 and the New Jersey Turnpike. I imagined what it would be like to be Bruce, cruising in that Vette up the Pike under that giant Exxon sign in the wee, wee hours, thinking up song ideas while listening to his favorite tunes in that bad-ass Corvette. - Frank StefankoSIZE 27 x 37MEDIUM Aluminum metal print.VALUE $6,800 - $9,000STARTING BID $5,250

WOODSTOCK, BETHEL, NY, 1969LINER NOTES I drove up toward Woodstock in New York's Catskill Mountains and got to within four or five miles of the festival when traffic came to a complete halt. I heard radio reports that the police might shut down all roads, including the New York State Thruway, which led to the nearby town of Bethel. And that's what they did. I had to walk four-plus miles to my motel' One photo I took as I walked to the site on the first day remains one of the most iconic images from Woodstock: an S-shaped curve of cars, literally hundreds of vehicles trapped on the road. JIM MORRISON, ROUNDHOUSE, LONDON, 1968LINER NOTES As the show began, Morrison came out dressed in his normal costume (WARDROBE) of black leather trousers and jacket and white shirt. He seemed to me somewhat puffy-faced. It was as if he was pouting. Combined with his high cheekbones and long hair, it was the high-fashion look of a photographer's model. He walked slowly (a very studied slowly it seemed to me), to the microphone. He grasped it in both hands and leaned his weight upon it, looking down. When he sang, he put his lips directly to the mike and mouthed the lyric in such a way that it seemed that if he wasn't careful he might inadvertently swallow it. He hardly moved. When he was not singing, he hung his head down, drooping. He seemed to be trying to manifest an incredible tension that to me simply wasn't there. When in the middle of When the Music's Over and the song reaches a crescendo, Morrison throws his head back and yells, WE WANT THE WORLD AND WE WANT IT [pause] NOW! It is the clear, intended rallying point of the set, the moment audiences cheer wildly But London was not New York or anywhere in America, and here the audience reacted mildly. Who knows how that felt. It's too bright in here, Morrison said, squinting into the lights. I want those lights off, and he pointed out at the lights, which were, of course, necessary for the filming. The lights stayed on. The music stopped.- Ethan RussellSIZE 20 x 24MEDIUM Platinum print.VALUE $3,500 - $4,500STARTING BID $2,750

JOHN MONTELEONE, FOUR SEASONS GUITARS SERIES LINER NOTES Four guitars created by master luthier John Monteleone, each representing one of the four seasons and photographed by Jonathan Singer. The idea to construct an inseparable quartet of guitars, each one thematically representing one of the four seasons, slowly materialized after years of amassing a collection of tone woods that began to speak to my visualization of the seasons as a complete set of guitars. The building process took over six years to complete. The designs grew largely as improvisations along the way and included inlay designs of semi-precious stones with precious metals and jewels in the ornamentation. The bodies, necks and sound boards are all carved from a variety of figured maples and spruces from the American and European continents. An assortment of natural and dyed woods were used around the edges of the guitars to ornamentally frame their borders. -John MonteleoneWINTER Alpine spruce, curly red maple, macassar ebony, Honduras mahogany, African paduak, sterling silver, mother-of-pearl, diamonds; natural finish.SPRING Italian spruce, tiger maple, ebony, curly sugar maple, Honduras mahogany, African paduak, mother-of-pearl abalone, paua shell, turquoise, diamonds; sunburst finish (white to blue), cutaway.SUMMER German alpine spruce, Oregon big leaf maple, macassar ebony, Honduras mahogany, African paduak, red coral reconstituted stone, mother-of-pearl, diamonds, rubies; scroll body, sunburst finish (yellow to red), scroll body with cutaway;AUTUMN Alpine spruce, Oregon big-leaf maple, ebony, koa, Honduras mahogany, African paduak, spiney oyster reconstituted stone, mother-of-pearl; sunburst finish (yellow to orange), cutaway.SPECIFICS Photographed with a H2D-39 Hasselblad digital camera.SIZE 24 x 36 MEDIUM Four archival digital prints on rag paper in clam-shell box.VALUE $5,400 - $6,000STARTING BID $4,200

JIM MORRISON OF THE DOORS, NEW YORK CITY, 1967LINER NOTES In 1967, photographer Joel Brodsky took a series of black and white portraits of The Doors and Jim Morrison, known as The Young Lion photo session. This photograph is considered to be the most iconic image of Morrison. The shot on the inner sleeve of the Greatest Hits album was pretty near the end, I think. By that time, he was so drunk he was stumbling into the lights and we had to stop the session. He wasn't a wild drunk - actually he was kind of quiet - but his equilibrium wasn't too terrific. Still, he was great to photograph because he had a very interesting look. It seemed like a good session to me'Morrison never really looked that way again, and those pictures have become a big part of The Doors' legend. I think I got him at his peak -Joel BrodskySIZE 16 x 20MEDIUM Platinum print.VALUE $3,000 - $3,750 STARTING BID $2,400

BJÖRK, COVENT GARDEN, LONDON, DATE UNKNOWNEnjoy Cock, Dave Stewart's apartment in Seven Dials.LINER NOTES This is from the same shoot as Björk In Spaces, for the cover of a magazine. I built a wall of flowers so when she stood in front with her Enjoy Cock t-shirt it was a juxtaposition between the pretty flowers and the bold statement on the t-shirt. She had a very angelic smile which made the portrait complete.-Dave StewartSPECIFICS Rolleiflex large format; negatives are 6x6 and Stewart used Fuji FilmSIZE 20 x 24MEDIUM Archival digital print.VALUE $1,300 - $1,800STARTING BID $1,050
